Hip and Elbow Testing in Australian Shepherds

Australian Shepherds are prone to hip and elbow dysplasia, and if you’ve spent time around the breed – whether as an owner, breeder, or veterinarian – you’ve likely encountered discussions about screening. The testing itself isn’t complicated, but understanding what the results mean and why they matter requires looking beyond the score. After years of working with these dogs, I’ve seen firsthand how screening shapes breeding decisions and how it influences what owners can realistically expect from their dogs as they age.

Dysplasia isn’t a simple on-off condition. It’s a structural variation in how the hip or elbow joint develops, ranging from nearly perfect to severely compromised. A dog can have dysplastic joints and never show lameness, while another with a similar score might develop arthritis by middle age. The testing doesn’t predict the future with certainty – it identifies risk. That distinction matters when you’re trying to make sense of a report or deciding whether to breed a particular dog.

How the Screening Works

The standard method in North America is OFA (Orthopedic Foundation for Animals) evaluation, though PennHIP offers an alternative approach. Both require radiographs taken under anesthesia or heavy sedation. The dog lies in a specific position, usually on their back with hind legs extended, and the veterinarian takes a standardized X-ray of the pelvis and hips. For elbows, the positioning is different – typically a lateral view with the joint flexed at a specific angle.

The radiographs are sent to board-certified veterinary radiologists who grade the joints independently. They’re looking at the congruence of the joint surfaces, the depth of the hip socket, the presence of bone spurs or remodeling, and other structural markers. OFA uses a seven-point scale: Excellent, Good, Fair, Borderline, Mild, Moderate, or Severe. PennHIP takes a different approach, calculating a distraction index that measures joint laxity – essentially how much the femoral head can move within the socket.

The timing of the test matters. OFA requires dogs to be at least 24 months old before results are officially registered, though many vets will take the radiographs earlier for preliminary assessment. The reasoning is that dysplasia develops as the dog grows, and scoring too early can miss changes that occur as skeletal maturity is reached. PennHIP can be performed as early as 16 weeks, which appeals to breeders who want information sooner, but the interpretation shifts based on age.

What the Grades Actually Tell You

An “Excellent” or “Good” rating doesn’t guarantee a dog will never develop arthritis. It means the joint structure is well-formed and the risk of early-onset problems is lower. I’ve seen dogs with Good hips that developed mild arthritis by age 10, usually from cumulative wear rather than dysplasia itself. Conversely, I’ve known dogs with Fair or Borderline ratings that remained sound their entire lives, particularly if they maintained lean body weight and didn’t engage in excessive high-impact activity.

A Borderline or Mild rating is where many owners feel uncertain. These dogs aren’t severely dysplastic, but they’re not normal either. The joint shows some structural variation that could progress or could remain stable. Breeders typically don’t use Borderline dogs in breeding programs, though individual circumstances vary. Some will breed a dog with a Mild rating if other health markers are strong and the dog is otherwise valuable to the breed. Others won’t. There’s no universal standard – it depends on the breeder’s philosophy and the breed’s current genetic landscape.

Moderate and Severe dysplasia are clearer. These dogs have noticeably abnormal joint structure. A Moderate rating often correlates with clinical signs – lameness, reluctance to jump or climb stairs, stiffness after rest. Severe dysplasia is the most debilitating, though even here, individual dogs vary in how much pain or limitation they experience. These dogs should not be bred, and most responsible breeders won’t.

The Practical Side of Screening

From a breeding perspective, hip and elbow testing is foundational. Responsible Australian Shepherd breeders screen their breeding stock and keep records. Some maintain their own databases; others register results with OFA. When you contact a breeder and ask about their dogs’ hip and elbow status, you should expect a straightforward answer with documentation. If they’re evasive or claim they don’t test because “their lines are clean,” that’s a red flag.

The cost of screening – typically $300 to $600 per dog depending on location and whether anesthesia is required – is a standard business expense for breeders. It’s one of the reasons puppies from tested parents cost more than those from untested parents. That premium reflects the time, expense, and responsibility involved in screening.

For owners, the value of knowing a dog’s hip and elbow status is primarily informational. If your Australian Shepherd has a Good or Excellent rating, you can feel reasonably confident about their joint structure. If they have a Fair or Borderline rating, it’s worth discussing with your veterinarian what that means for exercise recommendations, weight management, and monitoring as the dog ages. Some vets recommend more conservative exercise protocols for dogs with lower scores, though the evidence for this is mixed.

Beyond the Score

Testing results are one piece of a larger health picture. A dog with excellent hips and elbows can still develop orthopedic problems from injury, obesity, or excessive repetitive stress. Conversely, a dog with Fair hips who maintains ideal body weight and gets appropriate exercise often does better than a dog with Good hips who is overweight and sedentary.

Genetics matter, but environment and management matter too. Australian Shepherds are active dogs, and overexercise – particularly in young dogs before skeletal maturity – can stress developing joints. Obesity is one of the most modifiable risk factors for joint problems, regardless of dysplasia status. I’ve seen more dogs develop arthritis from being overweight than from dysplasia alone.

The breed’s popularity has complicated the screening landscape. Not all Australian Shepherds are tested, and not all breeders prioritize it equally. Some lines have strong screening histories; others don’t. If you’re considering a puppy, asking about hip and elbow testing is a legitimate question. It tells you something about the breeder’s commitment to the breed’s health, even if it doesn’t guarantee your individual dog won’t have problems.

Over time, consistent screening and selective breeding for better joint structure has improved the breed’s overall health profile. It’s not perfect – dysplasia still occurs – but the average Australian Shepherd today likely has better hip and elbow structure than dogs from 20 or 30 years ago. That’s the slow work of responsible breeding, and testing is how it’s measured.
