Working with Australian Shepherds over the years, I’ve noticed that health testing is one of those areas where breeders fall into two camps: those who understand its real purpose, and those who treat it as a checkbox. The difference matters more than people realize, especially when you’re looking at a breed as active and structurally sound as the Aussie.
Health testing isn’t about guaranteeing a perfect dog. It’s about reducing the likelihood of inherited conditions that could affect quality of life or create unexpected veterinary expenses down the road. Australian Shepherds are generally hardy animals, but like all breeds, they carry genetic predispositions toward certain issues. Responsible breeders screen for these not because the breed is fragile, but because they’re serious about breeding dogs that stay sound throughout their working years.
The testing landscape has evolved considerably. What was considered thorough ten years ago isn’t the same standard today. Genetic testing technology has improved, and our understanding of inheritance patterns has deepened. A breeder who’s keeping current with research tends to make better breeding decisions than one who relies on outdated protocols.
Hip and Elbow Evaluation
Hip dysplasia remains the most common structural concern in the breed. The Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA) scoring system is what most breeders reference in North America, though PennHIP offers an alternative approach that some find more predictive. The difference between these methods matters less than the fact that a breeder is actually doing the screening.
What I’ve observed is that many people misunderstand what a “good” hip score actually means. A dog with OFA-certified hips can still develop osteoarthritis later in life, particularly if the dog is overworked as a young animal or gains excess weight. The testing identifies structural risk, not destiny. An Australian Shepherd with fair hips that’s kept lean and exercised appropriately often does better than a dog with excellent hips that’s overfed and under-exercised.
Elbow dysplasia gets less attention than hips, but it’s worth asking about. Australian Shepherds don’t tend to develop elbow issues at the rates seen in larger breeds, but responsible breeders screen for it anyway. It’s another one of those conditions where early detection through testing helps inform breeding decisions.
Eye Health and Genetic Vision Issues
The Canine Eye Registration Foundation (CERF) examination is standard practice among serious breeders. A veterinary ophthalmologist performs this screening to identify conditions like progressive retinal atrophy (PRA), collie eye anomaly (CEA), and other inherited eye diseases. In Australian Shepherds, PRA has historically been the primary concern, though its prevalence has dropped significantly as breeders have become more diligent.
What’s changed recently is the availability of genetic tests for PRA. Rather than relying solely on clinical examination, breeders can now identify carriers before breeding. This is a meaningful shift because a dog can be clinically normal but still carry a recessive gene. DNA testing removes that uncertainty. I’ve seen breeders who use both the clinical exam and genetic testing – this redundancy is actually smart practice, not overkill.
Collie eye anomaly is less common in Australian Shepherds than in Rough Collies, but it does occur. Most cases are mild, but some can affect vision. A good breeder will have this screened and documented.
Genetic Testing and Carrier Status
This is where the field has changed most dramatically in the last five years. DNA panels now screen for multiple recessive conditions simultaneously. For Australian Shepherds, common genetic concerns include Collie Eye Anomaly, Progressive Retinal Atrophy variants, and Hereditary Cataracts. Some panels also test for Multidrug Resistance (MDR1), which affects how certain medications are metabolized.
The MDR1 mutation is worth understanding. Australian Shepherds can carry this gene, and it matters if your dog ever needs certain antiparasitic medications or chemotherapy drugs. A dog that’s homozygous for the mutation (two copies) needs dose adjustments or alternative medications. This is practical information that affects real veterinary care.
When evaluating a breeder, ask specifically which genetic tests they run and request the results. Responsible breeders are transparent about this. They don’t hide carrier status; they use it to make informed breeding decisions. A carrier dog isn’t a “bad” dog – it’s just one that shouldn’t be bred to another carrier of the same condition.
Thyroid Function and Immune Screening
Hypothyroidism shows up in Australian Shepherds at moderate rates. The OFA maintains a thyroid registry where breeders can submit results from dogs tested by a certified laboratory. A single test at one point in time isn’t as meaningful as a baseline established early in a dog’s life. Some breeders test at 12 months and again at maturity to establish a pattern.
Autoimmune thyroiditis is the underlying issue in most cases. This is an inherited tendency, not just a thyroid problem. A dog with autoimmune thyroid disease requires lifelong medication, which is manageable but worth avoiding if possible through selective breeding.
Screening for other autoimmune conditions is less standardized. Some breeders test for conditions like degenerative myelopathy (DM) or von Willebrand’s disease, though the latter is relatively uncommon in the breed. The decision to test for these depends on family history and what the breeder has observed in their lines.
What Responsible Breeders Actually Do
In my experience, the breeders who produce the soundest dogs aren’t necessarily the ones running the longest list of tests. They’re the ones who understand their own lines well enough to know which tests matter most. A breeder with five generations of health records might screen differently than one starting out, and both approaches can be valid.
The key difference is transparency and follow-through. A responsible breeder will share test results without being asked, explain what the results mean, and discuss how those results informed their breeding decision. They won’t breed two carriers of the same recessive condition. They won’t breed a dog with borderline hips without considering the risk. They’ll retire dogs from breeding if health issues emerge.
What I’ve also noticed is that breeders who do comprehensive testing tend to be more selective about which dogs they breed at all. Testing costs money and time, so breeders who commit to it are usually committed to quality overall. It’s not a perfect correlation, but it’s a useful signal.
When you’re considering an Australian Shepherd puppy, asking about health testing is legitimate. A breeder who gets defensive about it or vague with answers is telling you something. A breeder who pulls up test results and explains the reasoning is someone who’s thought seriously about what they’re doing. That distinction often matters more than any single test result.
